MEDIA ADVISORY: Panel Discussion on U.S.-China Relationship to Feature Forum's Executive Vice President for Policy

New York, N.Y. - Forum Executive Vice President for Policy John R. Dearie will be a featured panelist at the China Institute's upcoming China Briefcase Lecture.

The event, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China, is scheduled for Monday, December 15th from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the China Institute in New York.

On December 16, 1978, both the Chinese and American governments simultaneously published the Joint Communique of the People's Republic of China and the United States Concerning the Establishment of their Diplomatic Relations. Starting January 1, 1979, the two countries officially established diplomatic relations, marking a historic turning point in the bilateral relations. The event will examine the relationship between the U.S. and China since 1979 and predicts how the two countries can continue to collaborate to face today's economic challenges.

As a panelist at the event, Dearie will address the importance of American's continued engagement with China. Dearie recently represented the Forum and the financial services industry at meetings with key finance officials and regulators in Beijing and Shanghai. The purpose of the visit was to encourage the SED process, strengthen economic ties between the two nations, and reinforce the view that accelerated progress toward greater openness and modernization of China's financial sector is the key to more diversified and sustainable long-term growth of China's economy. The delegation also focused on resolving certain outstanding issues that have complicated the U.S.-China economic relationship, such as the trade imbalance and China's currency policy.

The event is open to the media and Dearie is available for interviews before and after the discussion. The China Institute is located at 125 65th Street in New York City.
